Hyundai STARIA Hybrid NZ: $69,990 launch and 1 September arrival

Hyundai New Zealand has opened orders for its refreshed STARIA and STARIA Load range, with the vehicles scheduled to be in dealerships nationwide from 1 September 2026. The practical change is a new hybrid powertrain, while the seven-seat STARIA Lounge creates a new top version of the people mover.

The published RSPs run from $64,990 for the diesel STARIA Load to $99,990 for the hybrid Lounge. That gives families, businesses, and fleet buyers a local comparison point, but it is still a recommended selling price rather than a complete drive-away quote.

The range now splits by job

The refreshed line-up has a clear divide between the two-seat STARIA Load and the passenger STARIA. The Load is aimed at commercial work and is available with either the 2.2D diesel or the new 1.6T Hybrid. Hyundai says the previous five-seat Load is no longer part of the refreshed range.

The passenger model is an eight-seater in Active and Limited forms. The new STARIA Lounge is the seven-seat flagship, with Nappa leather, heated and ventilated front-row seats, second-row relaxation seats, and other premium trim changes. The seat count matters more than the badge: a seven-seat Lounge is not a direct replacement for an eight-seat family configuration when every passenger position is needed.

Five local prices to put on one quote

Hyundai's New Zealand release lists these RSPs:

These are useful list-price boundaries, not the final amount payable. Ask for on-road costs, registration items, accessories, finance assumptions, servicing, and any fleet or campaign pricing on the written quote. The $5,000 step from the diesel Load to the hybrid Load is also not a complete running-cost calculation: annual distance, payload, fuel price, servicing, and the vehicle's actual use all matter.

Hybrid changes the fleet question

The new hybrid uses a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine and electric motor with a six-speed automatic transmission. The diesel is a 2.2-litre CRDi turbo-diesel with an eight-speed automatic. Hyundai publishes fuel-consumption figures from 7.2L per 100km for the hybrid and 8.1L per 100km for the diesel.

Those figures are a starting comparison, not a promise about a loaded van or people mover. Stop-start delivery work, motorway kilometres, passenger weight, towing, temperature, traffic, and driving style can move real consumption away from a published figure. A business should model the routes it actually runs and include downtime, servicing, payload, and replacement-vehicle requirements before choosing the powertrain.

The hybrid is also not a plug-in model in the published New Zealand line-up. A buyer should therefore ask the dealer for the final emissions and fuel-economy documentation for the exact variant, then keep that document with the quote rather than comparing a headline number from a different test or market.

The safety star has a child-seat footnote

Hyundai says the refreshed range retains a five-star ANCAP rating. ANCAP's current record applies the 2021 rating to all Staria variants, including the seven-seat Staria Lounge hybrid, and lists the rating as valid through December 2027.

Families should still check the cabin layout before ordering. ANCAP says top tethers are not available in the third row and does not recommend fitting child restraints there. The Lounge's seven-seat layout may be attractive for adults, but it is not automatically the best choice for a family that needs several child restraints.

Ask for the exact vehicle by variant

Before placing a deposit, ask the Hyundai dealer to write down the exact variant, seat count, powertrain, RSP, on-road costs, delivery timing, warranty and servicing inclusions, and whether the quoted vehicle is physically available. For a Load, confirm the payload and fit-out before assuming the cheaper RSP is the better work vehicle. For a Lounge or Active, take the child-restraint plan and the real passenger count to the test drive.

The useful comparison is now straightforward: match the STARIA's seats and work brief first, then compare the hybrid premium or diesel capability against the routes, loads, and ownership costs the vehicle will actually carry.
