Audi RS 5 Avant NZ: $196,990 launch and September timing

Audi New Zealand says 80% of its allocation for the RS 5 had been pre-sold by 7 August, ahead of customer deliveries expected from September 2026. The RS 5 Avant is listed from $196,990 before on-road costs, giving buyers a firm local price and timing reference while the remaining allocation is discussed with dealers.

The allocation is already mostly spoken for

The 7 August Audi NZ update says the nationwide dealer roadshow continues through the South Island and that pre-orders remain open through Audi dealerships. Its current schedule puts the RS 5 at Queenstown Motor Group from 27 to 31 August, followed by Archibalds Audi Christchurch from 3 to 8 September. Those appearances are opportunities to see the pre-production or display vehicle; they are not evidence that a customer car is available for immediate collection.

Audi says customer deliveries are expected to begin in September 2026. “Expected” leaves the exact vehicle, specification, allocation, and handover date to the written order and dealer confirmation. A buyer considering the car should ask which body style and options are included in the allocation being offered, rather than treating the national delivery month as a guaranteed date for every order.

The local car is a wagon with a plug

The RS 5 Avant is Audi Sport’s first high-performance plug-in hybrid. Audi describes a 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6 paired with a 130kW electric motor, producing up to 470kW and 825Nm. That is the headline powertrain change behind this launch; it is not the same product as a conventional petrol RS wagon with a small starter battery.

Audi’s New Zealand model page lists up to 83km of electric driving on a provisional WLTP basis. The same page gives provisional weighted fuel and electricity figures and warns that local vehicle values may differ. Those numbers are useful for comparing the published specification, but they are not a promise about a driver’s real electric distance, fuel use, charging cost, or road-user-charge treatment. Route, weather, speed, temperature, charging habits, and the final local specification all matter.

The powertrain also creates a specific ownership question. A buyer who can charge at home or work may use the electric mode for some regular trips; a buyer who cannot may carry the weight and complexity of a plug-in system while using more of the petrol side. Ask the dealer for the final New Zealand specification, charging equipment, warranty terms, service plan, and the exact vehicle’s emissions and efficiency documentation before comparing it with a petrol S5 or an electric alternative.

The September handover does not settle the invoice

Audi’s public Avant price is $196,990 MRP, and the model page explicitly excludes on-road costs. That figure is a useful starting point for a premium-performance shortlist, not a drive-away total. The written quote should identify the exact body style, options, delivery fees, registration items, finance assumptions, and any service or warranty package attached to the offer.

The model page also shows an RS 5 Sedan from $194,990 in the related range, but this update concerns the Avant price and delivery evidence. A $2,000 difference between body styles is not a complete ownership comparison: boot shape, equipment, insurance, tyres, servicing, charging access, and the buyer’s actual use can change the result.

Take two records to the Audi dealer

Save the 7 August allocation update and the current RS 5 Avant model page with the date checked. Then request a written quote for the exact vehicle you can order. Before paying a deposit, confirm whether the quoted car is part of the September allocation, which provisional figures have been replaced by final local data, and what the price includes beyond the stated MRP.
