10 lower-priced new cars in NZ: August 2026 snapshot
Suzuki, Chery, Kia, Mitsubishi, Mazda, Mahindra, and BYD sit at the lower-priced end of this August snapshot, but the cheapest headline is not the same as a drive-away total.

Suzuki is advertising an Ignis GLX manual at $22,390 plus on-road costs, while Chery's Tiggo 4 Urban and Kia's Picanto each start at $24,490 plus on-road costs. Those are current New Zealand price signals, not three drive-away totals, and the cheapest badge is not automatically the cheapest fit for a household.
This August 2026 snapshot covers ten lower-priced passenger-car starting points found in the OpenBoot catalogue and checked against current New Zealand manufacturer or authorised-dealer pages. It uses one entry grade per model, keeps temporary offers visible, and leaves commercial vehicles with ex-GST pricing outside the household-car ranking.

The amounts below are public starting prices observed on 17 August 2026, unless the source is an identified price list with its own effective date. Most are GST-inclusive prices with on-road costs excluded. The Mitsubishi figure is the RSP in the latest local price list located during this check.
The order is by the published starting figure, with ties left as ties. It is not a sales-volume table, a value judgement, a safety ranking, or a promise that every listed vehicle is in stock nationwide.

The first four price bands are close enough that a change in an offer, delivery timing, or required equipment can reverse the order. A $600 campaign saving can matter to the table while making little difference to a buyer who needs an automatic transmission, a larger rear seat, or a different body shape.
Why a commercial price is not a cheap-car price
Mahindra's Pik-Up single-cab chassis page shows $24,339.13 plus GST and ORC for the 4x2 S6. That headline is useful for a business comparing a work platform, but it is not a GST-inclusive household price. The separate XUV3XO row at $29,990 plus ORC is the Mahindra entry in this passenger-car snapshot.
This distinction also changes what the vehicle must do. A cab chassis may need a tray, registration treatment, insurance, and business equipment before it can perform the job. Put it beside passenger cars only after deciding that a work vehicle is genuinely in the brief.
The number you still need from the dealer
Consumer Protection says to check the total price, the vehicle details, and which on-road costs are included before signing. Ask for one written figure that identifies:

Check fit before chasing the last dollar
Take the job to the car. Test the rear seat with the people or child restraints that will use it, load the objects that normally fill the boot, and check whether the manual or automatic transmission changes the decision. For the ATTO 1, BYD's current page starts at $30,990 plus ORC; an EV comparison should also add charging, RUC, tyres, and insurance rather than treating its purchase price as the whole cost.
The same check applies to safety evidence. Use the exact New Zealand model and grade when checking NZTA or ANCAP information, and record the rating year or the fact that no rating was found. Equipment listed on a manufacturer page is not the same thing as an independent crash result.
